  1. DESQview 2.01 Technical Note

  3.                     Running WordPerfect 5.0
  4.  
  5. WordPerfect 5.0 runs quite well in DESQview and for the most part 
  6. can be run using the same setup that DESQview 2.01 provides for 
  7. WordPerfect with a few revisions.
  8.  
  9.  1.  Increase the "Memory Size in K" - This needs to be about 
  10.  384K.  If you are trying to get it to fit in a secondary 
  11.  DESQview partition that is 384K in size, you might be able to 
  12.  shave this figure by 15K or so, but 384K is pretty much the 
  13.  requirement.  If you have more memory available, WordPerfect 
  14.  will probably run faster if given more.  Generally, you would 
  15.  assign this on the Advanced Change a Program menu using the 
  16.  field "Maximum Program Memory Size in K".  If you have plenty of 
  17.  memory, setting this to 512K would be appropriate.

  19.  2.  Set "Displays Graphics Information" to Yes.  Naturally, you 
  20.  need only do this if you have a graphics capable display adapter 
  21.  and intend to use the "View" feature of WordPerfect 5.0.

  23.  3.  You may want to remove "NOFF.SHR" from "Shared Programs".  
  24.  The setup for WordPerfect 4.2 specified a Shared Program in the 
  25.  Advanced Change a Program called NOFF.SHR.  This program 
  26.  corrected a problem of inefficiency in the way WordPerfect 4.2 
  27.  implemented DESQview compatibility with respect to writing to 
  28.  the screen.  WordPerfect 5.0 seems to write to the screen more 
  29.  efficiently than version 4.2, but if you are a fast typist, or 
  30.  using a lot of DESQview macros, NOFF.SHR can speed things up.  
  31.  The only downside to using NOFF.SHR is that shared programs must 
  32.  be loaded in conventional memory, so if you have a program 
  33.  loaded in that takes all of conventional memory and then you try 
  34.  to load a window that uses a shared program, the first program 
  35.  must be swapped out.

  37.  4.  Enhanced Keyboards.  If you have an enhanced keyboard,  
  38.  WordPerfect 5.0 defines the F11 and F12 keys.  Due to the way 
  39.  WordPerfect detects the enhanced keyboard,  these keys lose 
  40.  their function when in DESQview.  There is a simple work-around 
  41.  however.  Create a DESQview macro in the WordPerfect window that 
  42.  defines the F11 key as an Alt-F3 and the F12 key as an Alt-F4.  
  43.  With this macro in place, these keys will work just as they do 
  44.  outside of DESQview.

  46.  5.  Underline on VGA Displays.  If you have a VGA display, 
  47.  WordPerfect will show underline on the screen in text mode by 
  48.  modifying the VGA character set.  If this feature is used in 
  49.  DESQview, other windows will also show the effect of the 
  50.  character set change since the actual hardware is being changed 
  51.  and hardware is "global".  To avoid having this underlining 
  52.  effecting other windows, you should setup WordPerfect to display 
  53.  underlining as a color as WordPerfect 4.2 did.
